​[MAP] How to Get to Hole-in-the-Rock at Lake Powell

Reaching Utah’s famous Hole-in-the-Rock is a rewarding experience. Whether you tackle the trek by water or land, hiking the rock formation will give you a challenging workout. The site also has historic importance as a “shortcut” that Mormon pioneers took on an expedition in the late 1800’s. Curious how you can get to Hole-in-the-Rock at Lake Powell? We’ve mapped out two entryways below, depending on whether you plan to drive or take your houseboat.

BY LAKE: Hole-in-the-Rock is accessible by boat from Lake Powell. It is located at buoy 66, about 60 miles up-lake from Antelope Point Marina or approximately 30 miles down from Bullfrog and Halls Crossing. Because of the rocky shoreline, we suggest renting a smaller watercraft along with your Forever Houseboat to get you safely to shore without damaging your larger vessel. The trail is to the right and is easier to follow above the high-water mark. Look for an informational exhibit on the right-hand slope. 
 
BY LAND: Travel east from the town of Escalante on Utah Highway 12 for about 5 miles to Hole-in-the-Rock road. The distance to the actual Hole (a natural crack in the hills) is about 60 miles. Since the road is unpaved, four-wheel drive vehicles or two-wheel drive with good ground clearance are recommended. Note: You will not be able to enter with a two-wheel drive vehicle after heavy rainfall. Check at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center before proceeding. Always respect the law and help preserve the land by staying on designated roads. Off-road travel by any vehicles, including mountain bikes, is prohibited.
