4 Things You’ll Need for the Perfect Winter Houseboat Vacation

If you’re seeking a fun way to spend a few nights away from home this season, houseboating is the perfect getaway. At Forever Houseboats, we offer rentals for winter houseboat vacations on some of the best recreational lakes in the Southwestern United States. But before you set out on your boating vacation, you’ll want to plan on bringing a few additional items aside from the basic packing list to keep you comfortable.

Here are a few things you’ll need for a perfect winter houseboat vacation.

# 1. Extra Clothes

If you’re looking for the best winter houseboating locations in the US, you’ve come to the right place. Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and Lake Powell all maintain mild winter temperatures—especially in comparison to America’s northern states. Of course, it still gets chilly at night. Pack extra clothing so that you can easily add or take off layers, especially if you plan on hiking. Also, remember that clothes and shoes won’t dry as quickly during the winter as they would on a hot summer day. Bring extra socks and shoes to keep your feet dry and warm.

# 2. Proper Outerwear

Be sure to bring a warm hat, gloves, jacket, and pants. Fleece or microfleece vests and jackets work great even if they get damp, plus they don’t take up much room in your suitcase. You may also want to pack a waterproof, breathable rain jacket and pants. It doesn’t rain much in the Southwest, but the chances for wet weather increase in the winter months.

# 3. Blankets from Home

While we do provide blankets on each houseboat, it’s never a bad idea to bring your favorite one along just in case. A comfortable throw blanket or Snuggie works well, as you’ll probably want to have something wrapped around you while stargazing or hanging out on the deck.

# 4. Camping Chairs

Although this suggestion may seem a little odd when you’re not actually camping, you’ll be thankful that you packed a few extra chairs to sit around the campfire with. All houseboats are required to beach at night, meaning that you’ll be anchored to shore. Set up camp on a nearby beach and enjoy s’mores, storytelling, and good times with loved ones around the warming flames.
