4 Best Reasons to Houseboat in the Winter

Summer is the most popular season for houseboat trips. In fact, a lot of people don’t even realize that houseboat rentals are available in the winter. But winter on the water is one of the best-kept secrets of houseboating – especially in the Southwest, where winter temperatures are most comfortable.

At Forever Houseboats, we offer year-round rentals on some of the best houseboating lakes in the country. Here are the top four reasons why winter is the best time for your inaugural houseboat trip.

The Lakes are Less Crowded

Each year, approximately two million people visit Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, home to Lake Powell. On average, less than 100,000 visitors come to Glen Canyon in the months of December, January, and February combined. That’s why winter visitors often feel like they have the whole of Lake Powell to themselves. With visitor traffic lighter than normal, there is plenty of room for first-timers to get the feel of maneuvering a houseboat on the lake.

It’s Warmer Than You Think

Most people are afraid to hit the lake during the winter months, thinking the weather will be cold and rainy. However, temperatures in the sunny Southwest have been known to reach up to 70 degrees in the wintertime—although Lake Powell maintains an average high of about 50 degrees.

It’s a Great Time to Fish

Cooler water temperatures make for great fishing on Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave during the winter. Striped bass, crappie, and walleye are very active during this time. You may need to head into some of the canyons to reel a few more in, but the colder water will draw plenty of fish to the surface.

You Could Score a Special Deal

Many of our Forever Houseboat marinas offer packages and fantastic deals during the off-season months. When booking a winter houseboat rental, be sure to ask if there are any seasonal specials available.

This winter, take advantage of smaller crowds, the warmer southwestern climate, great fishing, and special offers on houseboat trips. Find out for yourself why the off-season is the best time for your houseboat rental. For more information, or to make your reservation, contact us today.
