Breakfast on a Houseboat

Maybe you love to cook, or you just don’t want to venture far from the water to eat every meal. That’s why we’ve equipped our Forever Houseboats with all the comforts of home, from gas grills for nighttime barbecues to refrigerated compartments for storing essential ingredients. Your houseboat rental includes a dining area for family meals and countertop space for preparing food. From plates and cups to cookware and utensils, we’ve thought of everything you might need, whether you’re just popping in for snacks or making gourmet meals from scratch.

The Perfect Start

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While we’re inclined to think that every meal is worthwhile, we know it’s helpful to fuel up in the mornings before a full day of sunshine, swimming, and lake activities. Many of the avid boaters on Fodor Travel’s houseboat forum recommend stocking your boat with simple, on-the-go supplies such as breakfast cereals, instant oatmeal, and granola bars to make mornings easier. Stock the fridge with milk for cereal, plus fruit for a quick sweet treat. This way, as you stop in between family activities, there will always be something delectable ready to grab and go.

Keeping Tradition

If your family is anything like ours, Dad (or maybe Mom) is always regretting the lack of real breakfast food during vacations: “Where are the hearty bacon and eggs? Why can’t I have blueberry pancakes?” One of the major benefits of renting a Forever Houseboat is that you and your family members aren’t stuck with a bland hotel breakfast. Avoid the dreaded “continental” meal and shop for groceries such as eggs, cheese, and breakfast meats before your stay. Our boats are stocked with everything you’ll need to prepare a solid morning meal for you and your guests. If you do plan to cook a lot during your stay, no-stick spray is essential to easy cleanup.

Getting Fancy

It can be tempting to go offshore for breakfast. Luckily, making restaurant-worthy meals is a breeze on your Forever Houseboat. If you really want to impress your family or houseboat guests, try making French crepes. Many grocery stores offer pre-made crepe shells. Just warm up the shell in a frying pan and add strawberry and banana slices or a mixture of scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, and ham to the middle of the crepe. Fold the two sides towards the center, and eat!

Recipe Tip: For homemade crepes, combine 1 cup each of flour and milk in a mixing bowl. Add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of melted butter and whisk with a fork until smooth. The mixture should look like runny pancake batter. Pour a very thin layer into a heated and greased skillet. Cook until lightly browned, then turn with a spatula. Add fruit or scrambled egg filling and cook a few more minutes, then fold and serve.
