Houseboating is a fun and relaxing way to spend a group vacation. Whether for a family reunion, multi-family vacations, or even just a getaway with a group of friends, the first thing you need to decide is whether you will rent one or two houseboats. We’ve compiled a few tips help you determine how many houseboats will be right for your group vacation.
Confirming Your Headcount
Before you book your houseboat rental, you will need a definitive headcount of how many people will be in your group. When you make your count, be sure to include small children and infants.
Understanding Maximum Occupancy
Depending on the model, a houseboat may sleep more or less than its maximum occupancy. The number of people a houseboat sleeps is determined by the number of beds on the boat. However, the maximum occupancy is the number of people that are allowed on the boat while it is moving. There is a difference.
The United States Coast Guard determines maximum occupancy of a houseboat. Our 75 foot XTreme, for example, can sleep 15 people, but Coast Guard regulations prohibit more than 12 people onboard when the boat is in motion. If you have a party of 15, at least three members of your group will have to travel alongside the XTreme houseboat using a powerboat or personal watercraft.
Figure Out Sleeping Arrangements
Sleeping accommodations on our houseboats include private bedrooms, semi-private bedrooms, and sleeper sofas in the main living area. There are many options to choose from, so it is essential to select the one that will work best for your group. For instance, the semi-private bedrooms on the lower level of the 59- foot Deluxe are ideal for a family of four but may not have the same appeal for two couples.
There are a number of factors to consider when planning a houseboat vacation for a large group. A houseboat that feels spacious to a family of four and two couples may feel crowded to four couples or vice versa. Taking the time to consider the make up of your particular group will help you decide how many houseboats to rent for your vacation. Ready to reserve your houseboat – or two?
