Winter Houseboat Rental Tips

At Forever Houseboats, we offer houseboat rentals on some of America’s most scenic waterways all year. While our houseboats are fully equipped no matter the season, packing and preparing for a winter houseboat vacation is a little different than for a summer adventure.

Here are our top three winter houseboat tips:

Tip #1: Pack Extra Clothes

The best winter houseboating lakes are in the southwestern United States. Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and Lake Powell all maintain mild winter temperatures—especially in comparison to America’s northern states. But don’t misinterpret that to mean it doesn’t get chilly. Pack your clothing so that you can easily add or take off layers, especially if you plan on hiking. Moreover, remember that clothes and shoes won’t dry as quickly during the winter as they would on a hot summer day. Bring extra socks and shoes to keep your feet dry and warm.

Tip #2: Go Fishing

You can go fishing any time of year, but the cold weather brings many fish closer to the surface in the winter. For example, winter is the best season for trout fishing on Lake Mohave. Striped bass, found at Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave, often move as close to 10 to 20 feet from the surface during the winter. Be sure to get a fishing license from the marina store, where you can also learn about any lake-specific fishing regulations.

Tip #3: Enjoy Movies & Game Night

The nights can get cold on the water. Although we definitely recommend spending time on the top deck stargazing, you will probably also want to do a few indoor activities. A deck of cards offers nearly endless possibilities. You may even want to learn a couple of new card games for the trip.

If you are a book lover, consider bringing an e-reader instead of physical books to save room when you are packing.

Each houseboat in our Forever Fleet has at least one TV and DVD player, making it easy to kick back with your favorite show or movie.

Winter houseboat rentals are not that different from summer houseboat rentals. You want to conserve space, dress for the weather, and take advantage of the best seasonal recreational activities.
