Glen Canyon, Home to Lake Powell

Renting a Lake Powell houseboat is one of the most popular recreational activities at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Spanning across 1.25 million acres, Glen Canyon is home to Lake Powell and so much more. In fact, even though Lake Powell is Glen Canyon’s most well-known feature, it takes up less than 15 percent of the National Recreation Area.

Here are some fun facts about Glen Canyon that may come in handy when you are on a Lake Powell houseboat.

Visitor Centers

There are three separate visitor centers for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area: Bullfrog Visitor Center, Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center, and Carl Hayden Visitor Center at Glen Canyon Dam. Bullfrog Visitor Center and the Navajo Bridge Interpretative Center are open seasonally, while the Carl Hayden Center is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Each visitor center highlights a different aspect of Glen Canyon, making it worthwhile to check out all three if possible.

Glen Canyon Animals

Despite the seemingly inhospitable desert climate, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is home to a wide range of animals. Amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish all live within the park’s boundaries. Birds, such as eagles and condors, and mammals, including bighorn sheep, bats, and jackrabbits, are the most commonly viewed inhabitants of Glen Canyon. The frogs and toads are not easy to see, but if you listen during the evening along the shore of Lake Powell, you will be treated to a chorus of calls from the amphibians of the area.

Rainbow Bridge

Perhaps the most famous geological feature in Glen Canyon is Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Standing 290 feet above Bridge Creek and spanning 275 feet, Rainbow Bridge is one of the largest known natural bridges on earth.

Sacred to several Native American tribes, Rainbow Bridge’s grandeur is awe-inspiring. Over 85,000 people visit the majestic geological wonder annually. For information on visiting Rainbow Bridge National Monument, see the National Park Service website.

The visitor centers, wildlife, and geological features of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area make this trip worthwhile. Add in a Lake Powell houseboat rental and you will have everything you need for an unforgettable vacation.
