Spotting Wildlife from Your Lake Powell Boat

A Lake Powell boat is the best place to catch a glimpse of the variety of animals that populate the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Although the desert is an unlikely place to search for wildlife, Lake Powell and the Colorado River serve as a vital water source for many animals to flock to while migrating. Birds, reptiles, and fish are some of the most abundant wildlife in Glen Canyon that you will be able to admire from your Lake Powell boat. Don’t forget your binoculars!

Birds

Over 300 different types of birds have been spotted in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Diving birds, such as the Western grebe and American coot, are commonly seen fishing in Lake Powell. Birds of prey, such as owls and falcons, feed on the small mammals, reptiles, and fish in the area. During the winter months, American bald eagles are one of many migrating species that enjoy time in Glen Canyon.

Reptiles

At Glen Canyon, don’t be surprised if you see a Great Basin collared lizard soaking in rays on a rock or a kingsnake slithering about in the morning. This is because lizards and snakes, which are the most common reptiles in Glen Canyon, thrive in the area’s dry climate. Currently, there are approximately 16 lizard species and 11 species of snakes. But beware of rattlesnakes in Glen Canyon, which are the only venomous snakes in the area.

Fish

Before the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, there were very few fish in the Colorado River, but the creation of Lake Powell has changed that. Native suckers, bonytails, and chubs, which were endangered, have seen a marked increase in their populations since its inception. Several species of sport fish have also emerged since the dam was completed; Lake Powell is now home to bass, catfish, bluegill, and walleye.
