Best Lakes For Houseboats | Best Hikes At Lake Mead

Lake Mead is one of the best lakes for houseboats in the southwestern United States. With over 1.5 million acres, however, Lake Mead National Recreation Area includes far more than the lake itself. In addition to houseboating, hiking is a favorite activity of visitors at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. In fact, one of Lake Mead’s most popular hiking trails was recently awarded a national designation. Thanks to the stunning natural scenery of Lake Mead, amazing hiking trails are abundant. Here are our top two favorite hiking trails near our Callville Bay Resort.

Historic Railroad Trail at Lake Mead

Visitors to Lake Mead have long known that the area’s 3.7-mile Historic Rail Trail is a treasure. On June 6, 2015 it finally received the national recognition it deserved when it was designated a national recreation trail. The trail is the only section of the Hoover Dam Railroad system that is not under water or greatly disturbed. Largely flat and rated an easy hike, this trail is suitable for nearly everyone. The trail goes through five former railway tunnels and offers stunning views of Lake Mead, the Mojave Desert, Fortification Hill, and Boulder Basin, so you’ll want to be sure to have your camera on hand. Located approximately 40 minutes from Callville Bay Resort, the Historic Rail Trail is a great hike to begin or end your Lake Mead houseboating vacation.

Callville Summit Trail

This short hike is less than 1.5 miles round trip but ends with an amazing view. From the summit, you’ll be able to see Hemenway Valley, Fortification Hill, Boulder Basin, Boulder City, and the River Mountains. To the west, you can see Callville Bay and Mesa as well as the Black Mountains. It does include an elevation changed of 150 feet over less than a mile, which has earned it a moderate level difficulty ranking.
