Lake Powell is as vast as it is beautiful with nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline. No wonder Lake Powell houseboats are among the most popular ways to see the lake. If you’ve come to explore, we recommend the various canyons, which are filled with hidden places you can visit on Lake Powell. Here are some of our favorites:
Reflection Canyon
Reflection Canyon on the Escalante arm of Lake Powell was made famous by National Geographic photographer Michael Melford in 2005. His picture even became a desktop background for the MacBook Pro. Boating to this location, with the sandstone rocks towering above you, is truly awe-inspiring. It is possible to hike from the lake up to the incredible view captured by Melford, though it is strenuous and the trails are unmarked. Take caution if you attempt this excursion.
West Canyon
This is a wonderfully scenic canyon, there are many coves and smaller side canyons that are great for exploring. Please note, however, that some of these slot canyons are too narrow for Lake Powell houseboats. We at Forever Houseboats always recommend renting a powerboat or personal watercraft to take with you for such outings. Think of your houseboat as the base camp and your smaller craft as an exploratory vehicle to go adventuring.
Gunsight Canyon
Gunsight Canyon is so named because part of it resembles a firearm. We recommend it for our guests on Lake Powell houseboats because of its miles of sandy beaches. They are perfect for anchoring your houseboat while you go enjoy the water. Additionally, you can do it in view of Gunsight Butte, which rises in spectacular fashion from the lake and even offers great shade from the summer sun.
